The stronger rule is simpler: never let the channel that delivered the request also control the verification. If the message says the bank is locked, do not use the number in the message. If the caller says they are IT, do not authenticate them through the same call. If the recruiter texts first, go to the company’s official careers page yourself. If a family member’s voice begs for urgent money, break the script and verify through a different route.
That principle works because most scams depend on keeping the victim inside a controlled narrative. The moment the victim leaves the script, uses a known contact method, or pauses long enough to check independently, the scammer loses momentum. The FTC’s phishing guidance, the FBI’s imposter warnings, and CISA’s social engineering advice all point in the same direction: slow the interaction down, verify outside the message or call, and treat urgency as a risk signal, not proof of importance.
Security-first behavior also means respecting the role of payment friction. The bank transfer, crypto deposit, gift card purchase, or cash drop-off is not just the end of the story. It is often the last point where a bad decision can still be interrupted. Organizations should design payment approvals to require second-party verification on channel changes, invoice changes, new beneficiaries, and high-risk urgency. Households should create a similar habit for large payments, distressed calls, and requests involving secrecy. Fraud loves isolation. Verification works best when it is social.
The same logic applies to identity. Passwords alone do not solve social engineering, and NIST explicitly notes that phishing and social engineering are just as effective against long, complex passwords as simple ones. CISA goes further: the only widely available phishing-resistant authentication it highlights is FIDO/WebAuthn. Google’s passkey documentation makes the practical case for users: passkeys are bound to the website or app identity, which makes them resistant to phishing. Organizations need controls that break the social engineering chain
A company can spend heavily on perimeter security and still lose money because a help desk reset the wrong account, a finance employee trusted a spoofed instruction, or a contractor approved an MFA prompt they did not initiate.
