Yes. ESA describes AI as increasingly important in Earth observation because it helps process and interpret huge volumes of satellite data, including work relevant to climate science and cloud mapping.

Not on their own. Better chips, better cooling, and cleaner electricity matter, but recent reporting from IEA and ITU shows that total demand and sector emissions can still rise while efficiency improves.
ITU published a major 2025 assessment of current measurement approaches and followed it with 2026 lifecycle-based guidelines for comparing AI systems and alternatives. UNESCO’s AI ethics recommendation also places environmental and ecosystem protection inside the governance framework.
At a minimum: training and inference energy use, carbon intensity of power, water use by facility and season, hardware replacement cadence, and end-of-life handling. Those are the numbers needed to compare claims across vendors on something closer to equal terms.
It would favor high-value uses such as forecasting, monitoring, and enforcement; require lifecycle disclosure; treat water and waste as core metrics rather than footnotes; and ask whether an AI system is better than a non-AI alternative before praising it as progress.
